Watercolor Butterfly
Jan 08, 2025In this short tutorial, I'll show you how I paint a watercolor butterfly. I first start with a very light layer of paint. I'm using a mix of buff titanium, cobalt blue and a touch of yellow ochre. If you'd like it to lean more blue just use the cobalt and buff titanium, and you can also use white gouache. You can also substitute any color here, the key is to make it a dilute mix of paint.
I am careful to leave a few small white spaces in the wing to act as a highlight. After painting the first layer, while it's still damp, I add some definition along the outer edge with a touch of darker paint. I also create soft lines within the wing, following along the curvature of the wing.
Once the first layer is dry, I add a second layer of veining using a similar color mix. I add touches of darker cobalt blue into the body of the butterfly and outer edge of the wing. Then using a liner or rigger brush, I add the antennae.
