How to Take Better Photos of Your Art for Social Media
Feb 03, 2023How to Take Better Photos of Your Art for Social Media
Taking good accurate photos of your artwork is key to growing your following on instagram and social media. This in turn will help grow your audience and show clients a good portfolio of work. This is how I photograph my work for social media.
First, start with natural light. I like to set up my artwork near a window. Then I use a foam board to reflect light from the window back onto my artwork. I bought this foam board from a craft store for just a few dollars. It decreases the shadows and allows for a more even distribution of light. I place my work on a light colored background like another piece of paper.
Remember, your artwork will reflect the nearby colors of things that surround it, like wall color or bright blue curtains, etc. If I have something too dark or too colorful near my artwork, those colors will reflect onto the art and affect the outcome of the photo. So I try to keep the surrounding area light and white to keep the colors of the artwork accurate.
I take several photos at different angles, and make sure to have a few photos of my hand holding a brush, or show some pretty palettes and paint tubes. It adds a nice personalized touch.
Once I have a few photos, I use a free editing app called Snapseed. There are many other free apps out there, this is just one I am familiar with. Our cameras don’t always capture the true colors, so making edits afterward is helpful. I adjust the brightness, and color temperature to be neutral until I feel the photo represents what I see in reality.
It's important to note that when I digitize my artwork, I use a high resolution scanner for my watercolors.
