Loose Watercolor Peony
Jan 10, 2024I almost gave up half-way through painting these loose watercolor peonies! But I thought it might be helpful to show my process of starting out loose, and then adding more depth and detail with layers of watercolor. Plus, I'll show how I use the green foliage to define some of the flowers which really helps them 'pop' off the paper.
If it helps, here are some of the supplies and colors I used.
- Arches 140lb cold press paper
- Silver Black Velvet Brush number 6 or 8, Princeton Neptune Number 12 round, and a few large and small filbert brushes (both synthetic)
- For the coral color, I mixed Naples Yellow with Opera pink, and a touch of white gouache. I use some yellow ochre later too. My greens are Olive Green by winsor and Newton and Perylene green, however you can mix your own olive green using yellow ochre and cobalt blue or another shade of blue.
