One simple way to paint these dreamy watercolor delphiniums is to incorporate gradients into your paintings. What do I mean by gradients? In this short watercolor tutorial, I'll show you how to use value in order to create areas that transition from dark to light.

Here are the supplies I used to paint these delphiniums. Notice How the centers of the flowers and some of the petals are very dark, and other areas of the flowers are very light. There are a mixture of hard and soft edges in the painting, and this variation of light and dark, hard and soft creates contrast and that 'dreamy' look.

  • cobalt blue, winsor violet, alizarin crimson, and perylene green
  • a medium round brush (I used a few different ones)
  • cold pressed watercolor paper
